Valerian has become popular again as a sleep aid and relaxant. I've used the roots in tea, but it needs lots of mint to hide its pungency. The couple of plants I brought in have self-sowed all over, not usually where I'd like them! But windblown, they go hither and yon.

Fascinating post! I don't recall every seeing Valerian in a garden, but I have read about how it was used to calm peoples nerves during WWII. I believe I've seen it used in medicinal teas, too. Perhaps sometime I'll have to grow it in my own garden!
