The Morning Glory

Was it worth while to paint so fair
Thy every leaf - to vein with faultless art
Each petal, taking the boon light and air
Of summer so to heart?

Picture
To bring thy beauty unto perfect flower,
Then, like a passing fragrance or a smile,
Vanish away, beyond recovery's power -
Was it, frail bloom, worth while?

Picture
Thy silence answers: 'Life was mine!
And I, who pass without regret or grief,
Have cared the more to make my moment fine,
Because it was so brief.

Picture
'In its first radiance I have seen
The sun! - why tarry then till comes the night?
I go my way, content that I have been
Part of the morning light!'

Perfect poem for the photos of your fabulous morning glory. It must bring you great pleasure to see it blooming with all that snow in the background!

Thank you! 😊 Yes I love the contrast of the big beautiful blooms against a wintry background.

Wow, I've never seen a Morning Glory grown to flowering indoors. Well done.

They are so easy to grow indoors too!

It's been years since I grew morning glories - won't go into why - but this post of yours, along with your system message to me on garden.org today, has encouraged me to try harder to overcome obstacles in my way.

And I love poetry that echoes garden/flower/nature events - thank you for that too.

That last summer I grew morning glories so generously traded/shared from the old davesgarden.com mg forum, there were cultivars from some of their experimental crosses, some stabilized, and some with phenotypes that stayed consistent with their Japanese parents going back to the early 18th century Samurai.

On some summer mornings, around 8:30 am, the sun would be just breaking through morning mist swirling around my ankles and hovering below the roof line of our old mill worker's house lower down the hill, and those incredible Ipomoea nils would be opening all around me.

Can't do it again outdoors until our vandal gives us a break. So discovering your blog is all the more a treat for me.

Thank you,

Karen (Bluespiral on garden.org)

Hi Karen! I do hope you will be able to grow your morning glories again...sounds like you had some very special plants, and your description of them opening in the morning makes me almost feel like I'm there enjoying them too! 😊 You probably already know this as it sounds like you have way more experience growing Ipomoea nils than I do, but they are wonderfully easy to grow indoors as well if you can't have them outside. They are going to be my standby for winter flowers from now on, I think!

Does anyone know where I can purchase a fragrant Mignonette (Little Darling) as a house plant?
