Spread Thy Leaves, My Pretty Flower!

"Wake up from thy sunset bower,
Spread thy leaves, my pretty flower!
Spread thy leaves, unclose thine eyes,
For the silver moon doth rise,
And the golden stars are coming,
And the beetle's at his humming,
And the moth is from his bed,
And the cricket from his shed,
And the fire-fly comes to roam,
With his lantern-light from home,
Briskly wandering here and there,
Up and down, and everywhere,
Whispering to each flower he sees,
"What a night, without a breeze!"

Beautiful flower. Is its name "Marvel of Peru"? It certainly is a marvel.

That is one of its names, although it is more commonly called Four O'Clock. I think Marvel of Peru is so much nicer and quite fitting for such a flower! :)

It was so special to catch them just as they were opening last night! The colors always amaze and each flower is unique!

There are actually a few more verses to that poem. Now I'm wondering if it has ever been set to music? Might have to look that up! :)

Looks like a hibiscus - national flower of Hawai'i

I do see the resemblance! Hibiscus are such beautiful flowers but its too cold for them here. Marvel of Peru flowers are much smaller though.

Love the poem. Who is the author?

It is an anonymous poem. I found it in "The Young Lady's Book of Elegant Poetry" (1835).
