In a Vase on Monday: Snatched from the Frost

We had a freeze last night (24 degrees F!), so most of the garden is done for now. It really seems like just last week that I was sharing the first spring blooms! I decided to go out and "rescue" as many flowers as I could, to enjoy at least a few more days. I grabbed a small bucket with the intention of picking as much as I could and rearranging in vases later, but as I went along the arrangement started to take form right in the bucket, so that is where I left them!
Picture
I still wasn't able to pick everything, but here's a sample of some of the flowers included...
White Malope
The last Roses
Castor Bean seed pods
Balsam
Sweet William
Pink Malope
Nasturtium
Cosmos and bee!
Nicotiana
I think the bees knew something was up...they were actually following me around as I carried the bucket around the different garden plots! They seem particularly fond of the Cosmos.

It's always a pleasure to join Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for IAVOM! There will be lots of beautiful bouquets shared from around the world on her blog today, so please do check them out! Have a wonderful week! 😊

Lovely post. Beautiful Photography. I have a question. I did not yet plant any of the seeds you have sent me. Should I refrigerate them and wait until next year? Do not know what to do!

Thank you 😊Yes, you can keep the seeds in the refrigerator. Some seeds only tend to be viable for a year or 2, but some will last for several years under the right conditions (cool and dry). Now I can't remember exactly what all I sent you (should have written that down!!) but I think most of them will still be good for next year. The only ones I have any doubts about would be the Evening Dame's Rocket and Foxgloves. Garden Balsam might actually get better...for some reason, the new seeds tend to produce only single flowers but older seeds produce more double flowers! At least that's what I read and from what I've experimented with so far it seems to be true. The wonders of plants. 😊

Lovely late-season roundup of blooms. The castor bean pods are so interesting and I have a sentimental attraction to Sweet William. Have a good week.

Oh my goodness, freezing temperatures already? Yikes! I'm so glad that you rescued some blooms to enjoy inside. Your arrangement is a fabulous celebration of the season that was.

It's not unusual to have a frost in Sept. or even late August, but it doesn't usually drop below 29 until October so that was a surprise. Glad you liked it!

Not much above freezing here too, Joanna. I am so glad you managed to rescue these blooms, and for a motley collection don't they look good? Still looks like summer!

Oh wow, I didn't realize you got that cold this early! Yes I was surprised, with all the soft colors it didn't really look like a late season bouquet! 😊

Can't believe you had a freeze this early. Shame you loose all your beautiful flowers. Are you in northern Maine? I am in Florida and it has cooled off to a nice 91° here.🤣🤣 but we can feel some fall on the air early a.m. and late p.m. Things are starting to decline, like caladiums, ginger, zennias, etc. I so enjoy your lovely posts. Thank you for being so kind as to share them with all of us.

Cooled off to 91?! 😁This summer was a hot one, but some years we don't even hit 90 all summer! Yes I am in northern Maine...how did you guess? 😊
I was pleasantly surprised that my petunias survived last night...we'll see about tonight as the temperatures are dropping again. Your garden sounds like a tropical paradise!

That was one hard frost! At least you have a few more days to enjoy your delightful bouquet of salvaged flowers. It is bittersweet, isn't it? I'm always a bit sad to let it all go, but the fall (and even winter) has its highlights upon which to focus.
I've collected and dried some seed for you which I hope to send this week. Remember you wondered if green jewelweed seed was viable? I found out that they will dry to brown, so I guess the answer is yes, they are!

Yes there is still plenty to look forward to...I keep reminding myself of that. 😊My petunias survived, so that was nice! I covered some of them, but even those that weren't covered only had a little damage. Can't believe how hardy they are!
Thank you again for sharing the seeds! It is so kind of you 😊That's good to know about the Jewelweed. I actually experimented a bit, picking some seeds while still green and they started to turn brown withing a few hours. Also I noticed that green seeds that had burst and fallen on the ground where I walked were brown the next day.

Wow, gorgeous! So glad you could rescue so many beautiful flowers to enjoy indoors. We had frost too, but the garden is still fairly sheltered by the trees and shrugged it off!

It seems like a lot of areas are getting an early frost this year. Glad your garden survived!!

You really are in the north country. Our average frost date is supposed to be October 15, but I think it's been getting later. Love the Nasturtiums and Cosmos.

Your garden still has some time then! I've started fall clean up and getting ready to plant bulbs...
