In a Vase on Monday: Heartsease

10/23/2017

These cheerful little flowers are almost all that are left still blooming in my garden, and they are thriving in the chilly weather. They seem rather insignificant during the summer months, but I really appreciate them now! I almost didn't want to pick any, but then I discovered this tiny vase on the shelf and decided it would be perfect to hold just a few of them. It is from Nicaragua and actually belongs to my sister, but she didn't mind my borrowing it when I gave the flowers to her. :)

The violas are cheery and often underappreciated. (I must get some planted soon.) A charming little vase too.

Oh I love seeing violas in fall....I can never get mine to thrive past mid summer. They are a welcome surprise!

They usually bloom nonstop here with our cool summers. I didn't pick the spent flowers often enough this year, though, so they stopped blooming for a while but are reviving now

Aren't they happy little faces and so bright. You can't help but smile.

Yes they are! I noticed one flower still in my garden that looks like it has a little yellow face with whiskers and purple ears...kinda reminded me of Mickey Mouse!

I love seeing violas through the colder months, and like you say, they hardly get a glance when they flower in the summer with so much competition around them! Lovely little vase Joanna. :)

They are amazing little flowers...they look so fragile, and yet can survive such cold temperatures. I'll pass the compliment for the vase on to my sister. :)

Violas, especially the small-flowered varieties, are a sentimental favorite of mine. I can still vividly remember falling in love with them when I was around 4 years old. I plant some every year but it's still too warm (hot!) here for them to survive so I'm waiting, semi-patiently, for cooler days.

What a special memory! :) I didn't pay much attention to them until last year when a friend grew them, and they were still blooming cheerfully in November when all the other flowers were gone. I love them now, and will probably grow them every year.

I call them Johnny-Jump-Up. They are cheerful, aren't they, and remarkably cold hardy.

It's neat how many different names some of the old-fashioned flowers have! I guess Johhny-Jump-Up seems to be the most common, but a friend called them heartsease and I've been stuck on that name ever since!

Very sweet. I love violas of all sorts. Every few years I pick up a new variety or two and they cross with each other to form new surprises the always delight. 'Bowles Black' is a favorite.

That would make for some delightful surprises! I've done that with bachelor's buttons before. "Bowles Black" is a beauty! I haven't grown it yet, but have admired it in catalogs every year.

How sweet they are. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to woo Johnny-jump-ups into my garden. They never take. I like the vase you used, especially the side with the rust-coloured flower.

Sounds like me trying to grow sweet peas! Is it too warm for them where you are? They love our cool wet weather but even here they nearly quit blooming during August (maybe partly because I didn't deadhead them since I was saving seed).
